Wolfensohn, James D.
(1933- )
   Born in Sydney, Australia, on 1 December 1933, Wolfensohn became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1980. From 1995 to 2005, he served as president of the World Bank. From May 2005 to May 2006, he was special envoy for the Gaza disengagement for the Middle East Quartet, with responsibility to help coordinate Israel's August 2005 withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and to spearhead reconstruction efforts as the Palestinians assumed sovereignty over the area. Citing frustration with the stymied Roadmap process and hostile negotiations with the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority, he announced that he would not continue on past his original one-year commitment and left the post on 30 April 2006.
